Latomia1933: A Revival of British Colonial Heritage in Northern Cyprus

Located in the Girne region of Northern Cyprus, Latomia1933 stands as one of the most remarkable examples of British colonial civil architecture on the island. Originally constructed in 1933 by the renowned British architect William Douglas Caröe, the villa served as his personal winter residence. Although Caröe is best known for his ecclesiastical designs, Latomia1933 showcases his versatility and mastery of residential architecture.

The villa takes its name from the local quarries (“latomia”) that supplied the stone for its construction. Every detail—from the woodwork to the ironwork—was personally designed by Caröe and crafted by local artisans, representing a seamless blend of British design sensibilities and Cypriot craftsmanship.

In later years, the property was entrusted to the Department of Antiquities and Museums and functioned as a Fine Arts Museum until its closure in 2010 due to the urgent need for restoration. Since then, the building had remained unused, its future uncertain—until now.

Thanks to the efforts of Özyalçın Construction, this culturally and historically significant structure has been restored to its former glory, with careful adherence to scientific, technical, and architectural integrity. The restoration process prioritized authenticity, ensuring that every element remained true to Caröe's original vision while meeting modern conservation standards.

The revitalization of Latomia1933 is more than a restoration project—it is a milestone in heritage preservation for Northern Cyprus. By returning the villa to public use, it represents a broader commitment to protecting and celebrating architectural heritage, offering both locals and visitors a tangible connection to the island's layered history.
